Brine Tank Maintenance: A Guide to Cleaning and Refilling for Optimal Water Softener Performance

Cleaning your brine tank is an essential maintenance task to ensure the smooth functioning of your water softener system. The brine tank is responsible for holding the salt necessary to regenerate the resin beads in the water softener.

When it comes to the type of salt to use, there are two common options: salt crystals and salt pellets. Salt crystals usually come in blue bags and are recommended to clean brine tank every 4 to 5 years. These crystals are from the earth.   Salt pellets are typically packaged in yellow bags and the brine tank should be cleaned every 2 to 2 1/2 years. Salt pellets are compressed sea salt, they build up a sludge at the bottom.

To clean the brine tank, drain any remaining water from the tank and remove any salt residue or sediment buildup using a bristle brush or vacuum. The brine tank can be dis-connected and removed from the garage. Rinse the tank thoroughly with clean water to remove any remaining debris. Be careful where you put the salty water. It will kill your grass.

Before refilling the brine tank, check for any signs of damage or wear and replace any worn-out parts if necessary. Once the tank is clean and in good condition, refill it with the appropriate salt type—either salt crystals or salt pellets—according to the recommended replacement schedule. Put about a half of 5 gallon bucket of water back into the brine tank. You can use the valve but if you do not know how just add the water manually.

Regularly cleaning your brine tank and replacing the salt as needed will help maintain the efficiency and longevity of your water softener system, ensuring it continues to provide you with softened water.

Taking care of your brine tank is crucial for the smooth operation of your water softener system. By following the simple steps outlined above, you can ensure that your brine tank remains clean and free from sediment buildup, allowing it to regenerate the resin beads effectively.

Remember to choose the appropriate salt type and adhere to the recommended replacement schedule. By performing regular maintenance, you can extend the lifespan of your water softener system and enjoy the benefits of consistently softened water. So don’t forget to give your brine tank the attention it deserves and enjoy the quality water you deserve!
